The Washington Commanders have made a remarkable journey to the NFC Championship Game, concluding the regular season with a record of 12-5 and securing two playoff victories. This achievement marks the team’s deepest playoff run in over three decades, a stark contrast to the previous season’s disappointing 4-13 finish. The turnaround is attributed to a comprehensive organizational restructuring initiated by the dismissal of former head coach Ron Rivera, followed by the appointments of new general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn. Key veteran signings, including linebacker Bobby Wagner and tight end Zach Ertz, alongside the drafting of quarterback Jayden Daniels, have set the stage for one of the most surprising seasons in the franchise’s history.
The transformation began on January 7, 2024, when the Commanders suffered a 38-10 defeat to the Dallas Cowboys, which not only sealed their position for a high draft pick but also led to Rivera’s termination the following day. Under the new ownership of Josh Harris, who purchased the team for a record $6.05 billion, the organization sought a fresh direction. Harris enlisted the help of seasoned executives, including former NBA executive Bob Myers and ex-Minnesota Vikings general manager Rick Spielman, to expedite the search for new leadership. By January 12, Peters was appointed as the new general manager, having previously served as an assistant to San Francisco 49ers general manager John Lynch.
With Peters at the helm, the Commanders made aggressive moves in free agency, signing Ertz and six-time All-Pro Wagner, while also acquiring running back Austin Ekeler and quarterback Marcus Mariota. The team’s strategic drafting of Daniels, the reigning Heisman Trophy winner from LSU, solidified their commitment to building a competitive roster. Under Quinn’s guidance, Daniels was named the starting quarterback after a strong preseason, and despite a rocky start in the season opener, he quickly found his stride. By midseason, the Commanders boasted a 7-2 record, their best start since 1996, and successfully navigated challenges, including a three-game losing streak, to secure a playoff berth. The Commanders’ playoff journey culminated in a stunning upset of the top-seeded Detroit Lions, propelling them to the NFC Championship Game for the first time since the 1991 season, when they last claimed the Super Bowl title.
