Chiefs’ Steadfast 6: 7 Straight AFC Titles

Five years after the Kansas City Chiefs celebrated their first Super Bowl appearance in five decades with a thrilling victory over the San Francisco 49ers, defensive tackle Chris Jones reflected on his future. At that time, as he prepared to enter free agency for the first time, he confidently stated, “Next year we’re coming back. We’re coming back for a repeat.” Now, as the Chiefs gear up for a chance at a third consecutive AFC Championship, Jones remains a pivotal figure in the franchise’s pursuit of greatness.

Rather than testing the waters of free agency in January 2020, Jones opted to sign a long-term contract with the Chiefs after being franchised. Last March, he further solidified his commitment by signing an even more lucrative deal, positioning himself to potentially spend his entire career in Kansas City. As one of the six veteran players who will compete in their seventh consecutive AFC Championship game against the Buffalo Bills this Sunday at Arrowhead Stadium, Jones, now 30, acknowledges the challenges that come with sustained success. “It’s fun, though. It’s a challenge. It takes a lot of hard work, commitment, and belief,” he said. “We had this message in chapel about climbing the mountaintop… The joy is climbing to the mountaintop.”

The Chiefs have proven to be a formidable force, winning four of the last six AFC Championship games. Their only two losses during this stretch came in overtime, highlighting their resilience and competitive spirit. Quarterback Patrick Mahomes, another key player in this impressive run, recalls how the team’s first loss in the title game against the Patriots in 2019 motivated him to pursue further championships. “Building those memories with the guys and the community every single year is special,” Mahomes noted. With a roster that includes All-Pro tight end Travis Kelce and dependable players like Derrick Nnadi, long snapper James Winchester, and kicker Harrison Butker, the Chiefs possess a wealth of experience as they prepare for another playoff challenge.

Chiefs head coach Andy Reid emphasizes the importance of this experience, particularly for the younger players on the team. “The experience helps, especially with some of the younger guys,” Reid explained. “It’s single elimination, and that’s easier said than done. You have to make sure you stay focused and don’t let distractions in.” As the Chiefs look to extend their dynasty and secure another AFC title, the blend of veteran leadership and youthful energy will be crucial in their quest for continued success.
