The Dallas Cowboys conducted an internal interview with offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer on Tuesday night as part of their search for a successor to former head coach Mike McCarthy. Schottenheimer, who is the first known internal candidate to be considered for the position, has been with the Cowboys since 2022, initially joining the staff as a consultant before being promoted to offensive coordinator over the past two seasons.
At 51 years old, Schottenheimer is the son of the late NFL coach Marty Schottenheimer and has a wealth of experience, having previously served as offensive coordinator for the New York Jets, St. Louis Rams, and Seattle Seahawks from 2006 to 2020. His familiarity with quarterback Dak Prescott, cultivated during their two seasons together, could be an asset as Prescott embarks on the first year of a lucrative four-year, $240 million contract—the first in NFL history to average $60 million per season.
The Cowboys are exploring various options to fill the head coaching vacancy following McCarthy’s departure last week after his five-year contract expired. While Schottenheimer is a prominent internal candidate, the team has also interviewed three external candidates: former NFL head coaches Robert Saleh and Leslie Frazier, as well as Kellen Moore, who was the Cowboys’ offensive coordinator before joining the Philadelphia Eagles. McCarthy, who briefly interviewed with the Chicago Bears before they hired Detroit’s Ben Johnson, had previously worked under Marty Schottenheimer in Kansas City, highlighting a family legacy in the NFL coaching ranks.
