In a development related to the intense emotions following a high – profile football match, a teenager has been taken into custody in connection with the online abuse directed at Sophia Havertz, the wife of Arsenal forward Kai Havertz, police announced on Tuesday.
The incident stemmed from Arsenal’s exit from the FA Cup at the hands of Manchester United on January 12. After the match, Sophia Havertz took to social media to publicly share the direct messages she had received. These messages were of a highly offensive and threatening nature. In one of the posts she shared on her Instagram story, there was a menacing threat to “slaughter” her unborn baby.
Hertfordshire Police informed the English Press Association that a 17 – year – old boy from St Albans, located north of London, was arrested on suspicion of malicious communications. The boy has since been released on bail. The match at the Emirates Stadium had been a tense affair, with Arsenal ultimately losing to the Cup – holding Manchester United on penalties. Germany striker Kai Havertz had a difficult game, missing a close – range chance during regular play and then failing to score in the shootout. The subsequent online abuse towards his wife has drawn attention to the issue of inappropriate fan behavior in the digital age.
