Hewitt on Kyrgios Australian Open Loss

Lleyton Hewitt has expressed concern over Nick Kyrgios’ mental and physical readiness following his first-round exit at the Australian Open. The 29-year-old Australian made his return to Grand Slam tennis after a two-and-a-half-year hiatus, but his comeback was cut short by world No. 92 Jakob Fearnley, who defeated him in straight sets with scores of 7-6 (3), 6-3, 7-6 (2).

Throughout the match, Kyrgios appeared to struggle with an abdominal issue, leading him to suggest that he may have played his final singles match at the Australian Open. Despite this setback, he confirmed his intention to continue competing in the men’s doubles event alongside partner Thanasi Kokkinakis. Hewitt noted that Kyrgios seemed uncertain about the condition of his wrist, which had undergone surgery earlier in 2023, saying, “Mentally and physically, I think deep down he is not 100 percent sure.”

Hewitt emphasized the challenges Kyrgios faced during the match, stating that while practice allows for a different pace and rhythm, the pressures of competitive play are unmatched. He remarked on the difficulty of navigating a five-set match, particularly when one is unsure of their physical limitations. As the Australian Davis Cup team prepares to face Sweden on January 31 and February 1, it remains to be seen whether Kyrgios will be fit to participate, especially given the concerns raised by his recent performance at the Australian Open.
