Laporta Defends Barcelona’s Olmo Situation Handling

Barcelona president Joan Laporta took to the podium on Tuesday to defend his administration’s management of the Dani Olmo situation, asserting that there has been a concerted effort to undermine the club’s reputation. In a news conference, Laporta claimed that certain media outlets and opposition members were eager to see Barcelona fail in their efforts to register the Spain midfielder, who has since been cleared to play following a favorable government ruling.

“The events of the last few weeks reaffirm Barça’s strength and contradict the apocalyptic narratives propagated by those lacking knowledge or acting in bad faith,” Laporta stated. He reflected on the club’s history, emphasizing that similar smear campaigns have been launched in the past, often fueled by figures with media support. “I am pleased to see that they have not succeeded this time,” he added, expressing confidence in the club’s resilience against such challenges.

Barcelona successfully registered Olmo and forward Pau Víctor after the government’s sports authority intervened, countering the Spanish league and federation’s earlier decision to deny the club’s request due to a missed deadline for financial fair play compliance. Laporta explained that while the club had submitted its request on time, the league’s demands for additional documentation contributed to the delay. He acknowledged the emotional toll this uncertainty took on the players and their families, praising the squad and coach Hansi Flick for their perseverance during a challenging period. Additionally, Laporta addressed the club’s financial situation, revealing that a renegotiation with Nike had generated an extra 300 million euros ($308 million), marking a significant achievement for the club.

In other news, Barcelona announced that defender Iñigo Martínez will be sidelined for approximately a month due to a right hamstring injury sustained during the team’s 5-2 victory over Real Madrid in the Spanish Super Cup final. Currently, Barcelona sits third in the Spanish league, trailing Madrid by five points and Atletico Madrid by six at the season’s midpoint. The team’s next match is scheduled against Real Betis on Wednesday in the round of 16 of the Copa del Rey.
