Casey Stoney, the former England captain, has been appointed as the head coach of Canada’s women’s national soccer team, following a tumultuous period marked by a drone surveillance scandal during last summer’s Olympics. Stoney, who signed a three-year contract with Canada Soccer that extends through the 2027 Women’s World Cup, expressed her confidence in moving the team forward from recent controversies. She replaces Bev Priestman, who was dismissed in the aftermath of the scandal.
In her first statements as head coach, Stoney emphasized her commitment to enhancing the team’s performance and ensuring the players remain focused on their primary objective: winning matches. “It’s about now what we can do moving forward, how we can improve the team,” she stated. Stoney will officially take charge of the squad ahead of the upcoming Pinatar Cup in Spain, where she aims to build on the team’s previous successes.
Stoney brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having previously coached the San Diego Wave in the National Women’s Soccer League, where she was named Coach of the Year in 2022. Canada Soccer’s CEO, Kevin Blue, highlighted the organization’s dedication to learning from past mistakes and fostering a culture of change. He noted that Stoney’s appointment reflects the federation’s commitment to strong leadership and a positive direction for the team. With a distinguished playing career that includes 130 appearances for England and a bronze medal at the 2015 World Cup, Stoney is well-equipped to guide Canada’s women’s team into a new chapter.
