Rutgers freshman guard Kiyomi McMiller made a remarkable return to the court on Sunday, scoring a career-high 33 points after missing two games due to what the program described as a coach’s decision. Despite her standout performance, the Scarlet Knights fell short against Nebraska, losing the contest 69-62. McMiller’s scoring prowess was evident as she showcased her skills, but it ultimately wasn’t enough to secure a victory for her team.
Following the game, Rutgers head coach Coquese Washington remained tight-lipped about the reasons behind McMiller’s previous benching. “It was resolved the same way it was when a week ago I said it was an internal matter,” Washington stated. “I don’t have any additional insight for you all because it’s an internal matter that we handled internally and moved past it, moved on and moved forward.” This lack of detail left fans and media speculating about the circumstances surrounding the decision.
Prior to the loss against No. 4 USC on January 5, McMiller took to social media to inform her supporters that she would not be playing due to Washington’s decision, expressing her gratitude for their continued support. Although she traveled with the team to Minnesota for a subsequent game, she did not see any action. However, her return to the starting lineup against Nebraska proved impactful, as she tied her career-best with five three-pointers and has now scored over 30 points in three games this season. McMiller has consistently been a key player for the Scarlet Knights, averaging 19.9 points per game and reaching double figures in all 13 games she has participated in this season.
