The Washington Nationals have officially signed former All-Star pitcher Jorge López to a one-year contract, as announced by the team on Saturday. The agreement is valued at $3 million and includes an additional $500,000 in performance bonuses, which are contingent upon games pitched and games finished.
López, a 31-year-old right-hander from Puerto Rico, had an impressive showing last season, posting a 2-3 record with a 2.89 ERA, 50 strikeouts, and four saves across 52 relief appearances for the New York Mets and Chicago Cubs. Notably, he had a remarkable stretch of 39 consecutive scoreless appearances, including a 16-inning scoreless streak, highlighting his effectiveness out of the bullpen.
Despite his strong performance, López faced challenges during the season, including being released by the Mets in May following an incident where he threw his glove into the stands after an ejection. However, he quickly found a new opportunity with the Cubs in June. Over his nine-season Major League career, López has compiled a record of 24-43 with a 5.25 ERA and 31 saves. Since transitioning to a full-time bullpen role in 2022, he has recorded a 12-12 record with a 3.74 ERA and 30 saves in 183 innings. In a related move, the Nationals also designated right-handed pitcher Amos Willingham for assignment on Saturday.
