Verlander Giants Finalize $15M 1-Year Deal

Justin Verlander has officially signed a one-year contract worth $15 million with the San Francisco Giants, solidifying his position in the team’s pitching rotation. The announcement was made on Saturday, marking a significant addition to a lineup that is expected to be led by All-Star right-hander Logan Webb.

Verlander, a three-time AL Cy Young Award winner, faced challenges during the previous season with the Houston Astros, finishing with a record of 5-6 and a 5.48 ERA over 17 starts. He began the 2023 season on the injured list due to shoulder inflammation and later missed additional time from June 18 to August 21 due to neck issues. His struggles continued into September, where he posted a 9.26 ERA in five starts, ultimately leading to his exclusion from the Astros’ postseason roster as the team was swept by Detroit in the AL Wild Card Series. His inability to pitch 140 innings last season resulted in his free agency, as it prevented him from exercising a $35 million conditional player option.

As he approaches his 42nd birthday, Verlander remains determined to continue his career. “I definitely feel like I want to continue to pitch and compete, and I’m not ready to step away yet,” he stated in October. With a career record of 262-147 and a 3.30 ERA across 526 major league starts, Verlander is the active leader in several categories, including wins, strikeouts (3,416), and innings pitched (3,415 2/3). He has also made a notable impact in the postseason, boasting a 17-12 record with a 3.58 ERA in 38 appearances. Verlander’s storied career includes winning his first Cy Young Award and being named AL MVP in 2011 while with the Detroit Tigers before contributing to the Astros’ success after his trade in 2017.

In a related roster move, the Giants designated catcher Blake Sabol for assignment to accommodate Verlander’s arrival. This signing comes during a transformative offseason for the Giants, who are under the new leadership of president of baseball operations Buster Posey. In addition to Verlander, the team also secured free agent shortstop Willy Adames with a substantial seven-year, $182 million contract in December, signaling a commitment to enhancing their competitive edge in the upcoming season.
