Jannik Sinner and Nicolas Jarry find themselves in a unique situation as they prepare for their first-round clash at the Australian Open, both having tested positive for banned substances. However, their experiences diverge significantly. While Sinner continued to compete without interruption following his doping violations, Jarry faced a lengthy absence from the sport. The Chilean was sidelined for ten months in 2020, which resulted in a complete loss of ranking points and a return to the Futures circuit. In reflecting on their respective journeys, Jarry expressed a desire for the same level of support that Sinner received during his ordeal.
Jarry’s doping violations stemmed from the 2019 Davis Cup Finals, where he tested positive for the anabolic agent ligandrol and the steroid stanozolol. This setback forced him to miss nearly a year of competition, and it took him two years to regain his footing in the sport. His hard work paid off in 2023 when he achieved a career-high ranking of world No. 16 after reaching the finals of the Rome Masters. Despite the challenges, Jarry has managed to rebuild his game and is now focused on reclaiming his place among the elite in tennis.
In a candid discussion about his past struggles, Jarry opened up about the personal and professional toll the doping scandal took on him. He emphasized that he feels significantly better on the court today compared to two years ago and remains hopeful about fully overcoming the challenges he has faced. Jarry also voiced concerns regarding the disparity in treatment between himself and Sinner after their respective doping incidents, particularly following the International Tennis Integrity Agency’s disclosure of Sinner’s failed tests for clostebol last March. “I will keep working, and maybe it will go away one day so I can be 100% healthy again,” Jarry stated, expressing optimism about his future in the sport.
