Chinese tennis star Zheng Qinwen has candidly acknowledged that she is not inclined to smile following a defeat, a sentiment that may lead to what some have characterized as “cold handshakes.” Over the past year, Zheng has frequently found herself in the spotlight due to her demeanor after losses, particularly highlighted by her viral handshake following a quarterfinal defeat to Aryna Sabalenka at the US Open. This incident was not an isolated one, as her post-match interactions have drawn attention on multiple occasions.
While no players have publicly confronted Zheng about her handshakes, it has become apparent that she is not universally favored among her peers on the WTA tour. Notably, Emma Navarro labeled Zheng as “disrespectful” and “cut-throat” after their match at the Olympics, while Donna Vekic hinted at “stories” regarding the 2024 Australian Open finalist. Such comments reflect the underlying tensions that can arise in the competitive atmosphere of professional tennis.
Zheng, who is preparing for her second-round match at the Australian Open, emphasized her commitment to sportsmanship despite her reserved nature. “I always give a handshake to my opponent. I feel that’s basic respect,” she stated. However, she clarified that her respect does not always come with a smile. “If I lose, I will give basic respect and that’s it,” she explained, adding that showing a happy face after a loss would feel disingenuous. In her opening match at the Australian Open, Zheng overcame early challenges to secure a 7-6 (3), 6-1 victory over Anca Todoni, displaying a more upbeat demeanor as she smiled during their handshake. She will next face the winner of the match between Laura Siegemund and Hailey Baptiste.
