Mason Greenwood played a pivotal role in Marseille’s 2-1 victory over Rennes on Saturday, scoring once and assisting Adrien Rabiot’s goal. This win allows Marseille to narrow the gap to just four points behind Ligue 1 leaders Paris Saint-Germain, who have a crucial match against struggling Saint-Etienne on Sunday that could restore their seven-point advantage.
The match showcased a competitive first half, with Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli making a remarkable save against Arnaud Kalimuendo’s penalty in the 32nd minute. The penalty was awarded after a video review deemed that defender Amir Murillo had handled the ball, despite being unsighted during the aerial challenge. Rulli, however, showcased his skills by diving to his right and deflecting the shot onto the post, marking his third penalty save of the season. Kalimuendo eventually found the net just before halftime, converting a cross from Lorenz Assignon to give Rennes a temporary lead.
Marseille, under the guidance of coach Roberto De Zerbi, quickly responded after the break. Greenwood leveled the score by converting a cross from Murillo, before setting up Rabiot for a header just minutes later. Greenwood’s impressive performance marked his 11th league goal of the season, further solidifying Marseille’s position in second place, five points ahead of third-placed Monaco after 17 rounds of play. In other Ligue 1 action, Nice climbed to fourth place with a 4-2 victory over Reims, thanks to a brace from Gaëtan Laborde, while Lyon’s struggles continued with a 2-1 defeat to Brest.
