Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola revealed on Saturday that team captain Kyle Walker is interested in exploring opportunities to play abroad as he approaches the later stages of his career. This announcement comes as Walker, who has been a pivotal figure for the club, was omitted from the squad during City’s impressive 8-0 victory over Salford City in the FA Cup.
Guardiola shared insights into Walker’s aspirations, stating, “So two days ago Kyle asked to explore the options to play abroad at the end of his career.” The manager acknowledged Walker’s contributions to the team, highlighting his exceptional performance as a right back and his role in the club’s success. However, he noted that Walker is now contemplating a move to another country for personal reasons.
At 34 years old, Walker’s form has dipped amid a challenging season for Manchester City, which currently trails league leaders Liverpool by 12 points and has experienced a disappointing run of just one win in their last 13 matches. Since joining the club from Tottenham in 2017, Walker has accumulated an impressive 15 major trophies and has solidified his reputation as one of the finest right backs in Premier League history. Guardiola mentioned that this is not the first time Walker has expressed a desire to leave, recalling that the England international had voiced similar intentions two years ago. The winter transfer window is now open and will close on February 3, providing a potential opportunity for Walker to pursue his ambitions.
