The Colorado Mesa University (CMU) Mavericks men’s basketball team earned its first Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference (RMAC) victory of the season, defeating New Mexico Highlands University (NMHU) 89-77 on Saturday. This win also marked the first RMAC win for Head Coach Mike Dunlap at CMU.
The game featured a reunion as former All-American Mike Dominguez, now coaching the Cowboys, returned to Brownson Arena with hopes of securing a win. His team came out strong, leading 45-40 at halftime in a back-and-forth contest.
However, CMU turned the tide in the second half. While they gradually chipped away at the deficit, it wasn’t until Mason Honeyman’s three-pointer with just over six minutes remaining that the Mavericks took the lead at 74-72.
CMU dominated the second half, outscoring NMHU 28-10. The Mavericks also improved their ball control, committing no turnovers in the second half after making eight in the first.
The Mavericks secured the win, 89-77, and improved their season record to 7-6. The win marked a significant milestone for Coach Dunlap in his tenure at CMU.
CMU’s depth was crucial to the victory, with four players scoring in double digits. Will Mortimore and Honeyman led the team with 17 points each. The Mavericks also received strong performances from their international players, with the five Australian natives accounting for 65 of the team’s 89 points.
