Tottenham defeated Liverpool 1-0 in the first leg of the English League Cup semifinal on Wednesday, with Lucas Bergvall scoring his first goal for the club. The match was marked by a serious injury to Rodrigo Bentancur and a rare in-stadium referee announcement.
Bergvall netted the winning goal in the 86th minute after receiving a pass from Dominic Solanke. Earlier in the match, Solanke thought he had given Tottenham the lead, but his goal was disallowed following a VAR review for offside. Referee Stuart Attwell used a wireless microphone to announce the decision to the crowd and viewers at home, a first in English football.
In the sixth minute, Bentancur, the Uruguayan midfielder, suffered an injury after an awkward fall while attempting a header from a corner. He was treated on the field for 10 minutes before being carried off on a stretcher to applause from the crowd. After the game, Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou confirmed that Bentancur was “conscious” and speaking.
The second leg will take place at Anfield on February 6.
