Matt McLain Could Play in the Outfield in 2025

Cincinnati Reds second baseman Matt McLain may see time in the outfield in 2025. Earlier this week, the Reds traded for second baseman Gavin Lux, which adds complexity to the team’s infield depth chart. While Lux might eventually shift to third base, McLain has been playing in the outfield during the Arizona Fall League. This suggests the Reds may use McLain in a super utility role next season.

McLain, 25, had a strong rookie season in 2023 but missed all of 2024 due to a torn labrum in his left shoulder. In his debut year, he hit .290 with a .357 on-base percentage and a .507 slugging percentage. He also recorded 23 doubles, 16 home runs, and 14 stolen bases. McLain posted a solid 10.8% barrel rate and a .332 expected weighted on-base average (xwOBA).

Fantasy managers should keep an eye on McLain’s playing time in 2025. His ability to play multiple positions could make him valuable in all fantasy formats, as he can contribute across all five major categories.
