Carlos Alcaraz has arrived in Melbourne to prepare for the highly anticipated Australian Open 2025, where the world’s top tennis players will compete. The Spanish champion is set to hold his first training session today, partnering with Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, who recently reached the finals of the Brisbane International. Mpetshi Perricard made headlines by defeating Nick Kyrgios in the first round before being eliminated by Reilly Opelka.
This training session presents an intriguing challenge for the four-time Grand Slam champion, as Mpetshi Perricard is one of the most in-form players early in the season, known for his powerful serve.
At 21 years old, Alcaraz is adjusting from a winter pre-season in Villena, Spain, to the contrasting conditions in Australia. He has yet to progress beyond the quarterfinals at the Australian Open, a result that falls short of his ambitions. “I know that sooner or later I will win the Australian Open. This past year has had its ups and downs, but it’s still been positive. I still get emotional when I watch the videos from Paris and London,” Alcaraz said before departing for Australia. “I’m a very ambitious person, and I want to win the Australian Open to complete the Career Grand Slam. I want 2025 to be even more exciting. If I win, I’ll get a tattoo of a kangaroo, even if my father doesn’t like it very much. Being champion there is my main goal for next season.”
Alcaraz is considered one of the main favorites for the tournament, alongside defending champion Jannik Sinner and 24-time Grand Slam winner Novak Djokovic. Each of these champions has compelling reasons to pursue victory: Alcaraz seeks his first Australian title and a Career Grand Slam, Sinner aims to defend his title, and Djokovic aspires to secure his 25th Grand Slam and 100th career title.
