As the new tennis season kicks off, Nick Kyrgios has already confirmed his participation in the ATP 250 tournament in Mallorca this June. This announcement comes shortly after the 29-year-old made his return to the court in Brisbane, marking his first match in 18 months following wrist surgery.
Kyrgios, a former world No. 13, had initially returned from knee surgery at the beginning of the 2023 grass season, with plans to compete in Mallorca. However, he experienced significant pain in his wrist, leading him to withdraw from the tournament. Subsequently, he was diagnosed with a serious wrist injury, which at one point left him questioning whether he would ever play again.
Now, with the worst behind him, Kyrgios holds no resentment towards Mallorca. “Nick Kyrgios returns to the Mallorca Championships for 2025. Following his doubles appearance with Novak Djokovic in Brisbane, the Australian star is ready to shine again in Mallorca,” the tournament organizers stated.
During his comeback at the Brisbane International, Kyrgios participated in three matches. He lost a closely contested singles match to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard in three sets and achieved a victory in doubles alongside Novak Djokovic before being eliminated in the quarterfinals.
Despite the excitement of his return, Kyrgios shared a sobering update about his wrist after the tournament. He expressed concerns about his ability to compete in the upcoming Australian Open, stating, “I felt I’d been hit by a bus after the doubles. It’s going to be a rough day tomorrow for my wrist. I was really excited for the Aus Open, and after today … the reality set in to be fair. I almost need a miracle and the stars to align for my wrist to hold up in a Grand Slam,” said the 2022 Wimbledon runner-up.
