Daniil Medvedev Should Study Roger Federer

Daniil Medvedev is grappling with the most challenging season of his career since ascending to the top ranks of tennis. The Russian star began 2024 on a promising note, reaching the Australian Open final for the third time, only to fall to Jannik Sinner despite holding a two-set lead. This marks the second time Medvedev has lost a Grand Slam final after leading, having previously experienced a similar setback against Rafael Nadal in the 2022 Australian Open. This haunting memory has lingered, contributing to his loss of confidence and a title-less 2023 season.

Medvedev has struggled particularly against the rising talents of Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz, both of whom have exploited his weaknesses during crucial moments. His performance in the latter part of the season on his preferred indoor hard courts was disappointing, as he exited early from both the Rolex Paris Masters and the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.

Reflecting on his recent struggles, Medvedev described the past season as a “nightmare” and expressed hopes of returning stronger in 2025. As the 2021 US Open champion, he faces the challenge of defending his title at the Australian Open, with the risk of further decline in the ATP rankings and a potential hit to his confidence.

In a recent podcast hosted by Jimmy Connors, tennis analyst Spencer Segura provided insight into Medvedev’s struggles. “Medvedev is a perplexing guy to me. Why he plays wrong all the time,” Segura remarked. He noted that Medvedev often refrains from taking aggressive positions on second serves, a strategy that could enhance his game.

Segura suggested that Medvedev should take a page from Roger Federer’s playbook. “He changed his game and started coming in. He became Mr. Chip and Charge after 28 or 29,” he said. “Medvedev needs to return the second serve from inside the court; he has a great return. He needs to play more aggressively.”As Medvedev prepares for the upcoming season, adapting his approach could be crucial to reclaiming his place among the elite in tennis.
