Napoli secured a commanding 3-0 victory over Fiorentina on Saturday, moving three points clear at the top of Serie A.The win featured goals from David Neres, Romelu Lukaku, and Scott McTominay, marking Napoli’s fourth consecutive victory following a challenging month that included back-to-back losses to Lazio in both the Italian Cup and Serie A.
Atalanta, which ended 2024 tied on points with Napoli, did not compete in Serie A this weekend as the team participated in the Italian Super Cup in Saudi Arabia. Defending champions Inter Milan, currently four points behind Napoli, will face city rivals AC Milan in the Super Cup final on Monday and will also return to league action next weekend.
Fiorentina, struggling with three losses in their last four league matches, remains in fifth place.
Neres opened the scoring for Napoli just before the half-hour mark, skillfully maneuvering through three defenders to unleash a shot with his weaker right foot. Fiorentina’s Moise Kean had a potential equalizer ruled out for a handball after a lengthy VAR review, which ultimately upheld the original on-field decision.
In the second half, Lukaku converted a penalty, followed by McTominay, who capitalized on a defensive error to seal the win with a well-placed shot.In other Serie A action, mid-table Empoli and relegation-threatened Venezia played to a 1-1 draw, with Joel Pohjanpalo and Sebastiano Esposito exchanging first-half goals. Later, Udinese faced Hellas Verona in another league matchup.
