Belarusian tennis player Viktoria Azarenka has been knocked out of the WTA-500 tournament in Brisbane, Australia, failing to reach the quarter-finals. The tournament, which offers a prize pool of $1.5 million, saw Azarenka lose to Czech player Marie Bouzkova in the Round of 16.
Azarenka, currently ranked 20th in the world, was defeated in straight sets by the 44th-ranked Bouzkova. The final score was 4-6, 4-6, and the match lasted exactly two hours. In her previous match, Azarenka had defeated Australian Maya Joint (ranked 116th) in a tough three-set battle, winning 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4.
For top female players, the Brisbane tournament serves as an important lead-up to the first Grand Slam of the season, the Australian Open, which will take place in Melbourne from January 12 to 26. Belarusian players have seen recent success at the Australian Open, with Aryna Sabalenka winning the title in the last two years, and Azarenka claiming the championship in 2012 and 2013.
