The Indonesian Football Federation (PSSI) announced on Monday the dismissal of Shin Tae-yong as head coach of the national team. The federation stated that the decision followed extensive evaluations of the team’s performance and its long-term objectives. “This decision was made based on long and mature considerations regarding the Indonesian National Football Team’s goals,” PSSI said in a statement.
Shin, who was appointed in 2020, notably led Indonesia to the third round of qualification for the 2026 World Cup for the first time in history. Under his guidance, the team achieved a significant victory over Saudi Arabia in November, winning 2-0 and positioning themselves third in their qualifying group with four matches remaining.
PSSI chairman Erick Thohir, who had extended Shin’s contract until 2027 last June, addressed the media in Jakarta to explain the decision. “The dynamics of the national team need special attention from us,” Thohir remarked. “We see the need for a leader who can better implement strategies agreed upon by the players, foster good communication, and ensure effective execution.”
While no immediate replacement has been announced, there is speculation that the new head coach could be from Europe. The national team’s recent achievements have been bolstered by the naturalization of players of Indonesian descent who were born and raised in Europe. In the match against Saudi Arabia, only Marselino Ferdinan, who scored both goals, was born in Indonesia.Indonesia’s next World Cup qualifier is scheduled against Australia in March.
