Muhsin Ertugral has been appointed Cape Town City’s interim head coach and technical director after the departure of Eric Tinkler. This marks his return to the Premier Soccer League (PSL) after a five-year absence.
City parted ways with Tinkler on New Year’s Eve following a series of disappointing results. The club has acted quickly to bring Ertugral in as they look to turn their season around ahead of their next match against Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday at Cape Town Stadium.
The move comes as the club faces pressure to recover from a poor run of form that has seen them hover near the relegation zone, a sharp contrast to their previous consistent top-four finishes. Tinkler’s three-season tenure included strong performances, with second, fourth, and fifth-place finishes. However, a troubling streak of five consecutive league losses led to his exit.
Ertugral, known for his ability to turn struggling teams around, now faces the challenge of reviving City’s fortunes. “Muhsin brings a wealth of local and international experience to our project,” the club said in a statement.
The 65-year-old has an extensive PSL background, having previously managed top clubs such as Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Ajax Cape Town. Before rejoining the PSL, Ertugral served as a technical advisor to the Turkish national team.
This appointment feels like a return to unfinished business for Ertugral. In 2016, he was initially set to take charge of Cape Town City after club owner John Comitis acquired Mpumalanga Black Aces. However, Ertugral chose Orlando Pirates instead, and Tinkler became City’s first coach.
Now, nearly a decade later, Ertugral steps in to replace Tinkler, aiming to guide the club back to safety. His first major task will be leading City against Kaizer Chiefs on Sunday. The club hopes Ertugral’s leadership will help them recover and return to their competitive best.
