Australian tennis star Ashleigh Barty shared exciting news this Christmas: she is expecting her second child. The former three-time Grand Slam champion, who retired from professional tennis at the age of 25 in early 2022, married golfer Garry Kissick shortly after her retirement.
Barty announced her first pregnancy shortly after stepping away from the sport and welcomed her first child, a son named Hayden, in mid-2023. Now, at 28 years old, she and Kissick are preparing to expand their family.
In a joint Instagram post, the couple wrote, “Merry Christmas from our growing family to yours!” Barty has previously described motherhood as “the hardest thing I have done.” Following her retirement in March 2022, she expressed a desire to focus on new aspects of her life, including starting a family.
In early 2024, Barty attended the Australian Open as a guest, where she spoke candidly about her experiences as a mother. “He’s [Hayden] been a very good boy, very kind to me as I’m learning. It’s amazing how quickly it’s all gone, how much my life has changed but how natural it all feels. It’s hard – the hardest thing I’ve ever done – but it’s incredible, too. An amazing thing. And it’s probably helped me appreciate my own mother and my two sisters as well, in how they’re raising their own children,” she told The Sydney Morning Herald.
Looking ahead, the 2022 Australian Open champion is scheduled to participate in the Brisbane International next week, where she will also host a charity match through her foundation. Following the Brisbane event, Barty is expected to return to the Australian Open as a guest once again.
