Thanasi Kokkinakis has expressed his lingering frustration over Nick Kyrgios’s absence from their post-victory celebration following their Australian Open doubles triumph. On January 29, 2022, the Australian duo secured their first Grand Slam title by defeating Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell 7-5, 6-4 in the final.
After the match, Kyrgios playfully informed the Melbourne crowd that Kokkinakis, who was single at the time, planned to celebrate, quipping, “So ladies, let’s go.” However, the two childhood friends did not celebrate together that night, as Kyrgios had an early flight the next morning.
“I remember a fun night afterward that he wasn’t a part of because he took an early flight, which I’m still p—– off with him about! So I had to do it for the both of us,” Kokkinakis told Express-Sport.
Although they missed celebrating immediately after their victory, Kokkinakis noted that they eventually enjoyed some festivities together. “It’s weird because it got really delayed. I was trying to convince him because I was like, ‘We’ve celebrated nothing many times, so the one time we actually had a reason to celebrate, we didn’t do it.’ But we’ve had a few nights,” said the world No. 77.
Due to an injury, Kyrgios was unable to defend their Australian Open title in 2023, and the pair did not compete in Melbourne earlier this year. However, with Kyrgios now fully healthy and preparing for a return at the start of 2025, both he and Kokkinakis have confirmed their intention to compete together at the Australian Open in January.
