Former Chelsea midfielder Oscar is making a return to his boyhood club, Sao Paulo, after a 14-year career that included a significant stint in Chinese soccer.
Sao Paulo president Julio Casares announced the signing on social media Tuesday, sharing photos with the 33-year-old former Brazil international and labeling the transfer as “a super transfer.”
Shortly after the announcement, Oscar expressed his gratitude to Shanghai Port, where he spent eight seasons in the Chinese Super League. “Today I finish a cycle that marked my life forever,” he said. “I leave with my heart full of gratitude and pride for everything we achieved together.”
Oscar has joined Sao Paulo on a free transfer, although neither the club nor the player revealed the length of the contract. Local media, however, reported that he has signed a three-year deal.
This marks a return to Sao Paulo for Oscar, who previously left the club in 2010 to join Internacional. He later moved to Chelsea in 2012, where he won one Europa League title and two Premier League titles.
In January 2017, Oscar transferred to Shanghai Port for a reported fee of $73 million during Chelsea’s 2016-17 season. During his time in China, he won three Super League titles and became a fan favorite.
Oscar also represented Brazil in the 2014 World Cup, where he scored the lone goal in the team’s infamous 7-1 semifinal loss to Germany, who went on to win the tournament.
