Juan Carlos Ferrero, coach of rising tennis star Carlos Alcaraz, recently spoke with the Spanish newspaper Punto de Break about the player’s preparations for the upcoming Australian Open and his goals for the 2024 season.
Ferrero noted that Alcaraz is approaching the Australian Open with enthusiasm, saying, “It’s going well. Carlos arrived with great enthusiasm, and his performances in the USA have motivated him. We’ve been focusing on physical training, followed by increasingly intense on-court sessions. We are working on his serve to enhance its rhythm, making it more fluid and relaxed. Additionally, we’re focusing on his shot-making, as he needs to adopt a more aggressive mindset in certain situations.”
Looking ahead to 2024, Ferrero reflected on Alcaraz’s achievements, stating, “Winning a Grand Slam is always a significant milestone. If you win two, it’s magnificent and impressive. Victories at a Masters 1000 like Indian Wells or an ATP 500 like Beijing further strengthen the season. However, we also have to consider competitors like Jannik Sinner, who has had considerable success. There’s always room for improvement.”
Ferrero emphasized Alcaraz’s growing maturity as a professional: “Carlos is very aware of the areas he needs to improve. I see him becoming more mature every day in his approach to professionalism. I like how he’s preparing for Australia; he’s focused on addressing the things that haven’t gone well this year. He understands the importance of managing the ups and downs during matches, which is more about mental resilience than technical skills.”
The coach concluded by outlining their goal for Alcaraz: “We’re striving for a player who excels in nearly every aspect of the game. It’s essential to enhance his strengths and work on his weaknesses. The fluctuations he experiences during matches are one of his challenges, often linked to his level of freshness and motivation. That’s why we want to ensure he approaches every tournament with motivation, playing his best tennis week after week.”
