Valencia has dismissed coach Rubén Baraja following a disappointing performance in La Liga that has left the club in the relegation zone and reignited protests against Singaporean owner Peter Lim.
The decision to terminate Baraja’s contract came after Valencia managed only a 2-2 home draw against Alaves on Sunday, requiring a stoppage-time equalizer to secure a point. This result leaves the team second to last in the league standings.
The draw intensified fan criticism of Lim, with supporters accusing him of treating the club as a mere business venture rather than a sporting institution.
Baraja, a former Valencia player, was appointed head coach in 2023. The club has yet to announce his successor.
In a statement, Valencia expressed gratitude to Baraja for his “passion, dedication, and commitment” throughout his tenure, acknowledging that the decision to part ways was a difficult one due to the unsatisfactory results.
Valencia’s next league match is scheduled against Real Madrid at home on January 3, a game that was postponed from October due to severe floods in the region. The club is currently winless in its last four matches.
