The upcoming matchup between the Jacksonville Jaguars and Las Vegas Raiders on Sunday may not attract significant media attention, but it holds considerable stakes for the teams involved. With a combined record of just five wins, the game is particularly important for fans and those invested in fantasy football.
As both franchises look ahead to the end of the regular season in early January, they face critical decisions regarding their futures. The next three weeks serve as an audition for many players, particularly those with limited experience or uncertain NFL prospects.
“We know our situation,” said Jaguars head coach Doug Pederson. “But I think these next three weeks really can set us up for the future, for the offseason, for next year and how we can build and where we need to add pieces.”
The futures of both Pederson and Raiders coach Antonio Pierce remain uncertain. Historically, NFL coaches with records like the Jaguars’ 3-11 and the Raiders’ 2-10 often do not survive the season. However, there are arguments for retaining both. Pederson led the Jaguars to a 9-8 record in each of his first two seasons, including a playoff win in 2022, suggesting this year might be an anomaly. Meanwhile, Pierce is in his first year as the full-time coach, and the Raiders’ already thin roster has been further weakened by injuries.
Conversely, there are valid reasons for concern. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence has not yet developed into the elite player expected from the top overall draft pick in 2021. Pierce’s coaching decisions, particularly his conservative approach in crucial moments, have faced scrutiny in a league that often rewards risk-taking.
While the outcome of this game may not affect the NFL standings, it will have implications for the upcoming draft order in April—a situation neither team desires as the season draws to a close.
“We’re not winning,” Pierce acknowledged. “Do I want to win? Hell yeah, I want to win. We’ll keep chopping wood, and at some point, the damn thing will break and go our way.”
O’Connell’s Development
Raiders quarterback Aidan O’Connell, who has been mentioned in discussions about the need for a franchise quarterback, emphasizes the importance of patience. Having transitioned from walk-on to record-setting starter at Purdue, he is accustomed to competition.
“I’m more used to (competing) than if I was the unquestioned starter,” O’Connell said. “It’s been that really every phase of my life. I’ve been through it, and I think it’s just made me a better player in the end.”
Despite missing Monday night’s 15-9 loss to the Atlanta Falcons due to a left knee injury, O’Connell is expected to start against the Jaguars.
Thomas Approaches Milestone
Jaguars receiver Brian Thomas Jr. is on the verge of breaking the franchise rookie record for receptions. He needs just one catch to surpass Justin Blackmon’s mark of 64 set in 2012. Last week, Thomas also set team records for receiving yards (956) and touchdown catches (eight).
“We continue each week to load his plate up and give him more opportunities,” Pederson noted. “He embraces it well.”
Raiders on the Brink of History
The Raiders are one loss away from tying the franchise record for consecutive losses, previously set by the 2005-06 and 2006-07 teams, both of which lost 11 games in a row. The only longer losing streaks in Raiders history were a 19-game skid in 1961-62 and a 16-game slide in 2013-14.
A loss would also mark the worst finish in the NFL since the Jaguars lost their last 15 games in 2020. If the Raiders fail to win again this season, they will record their lowest victory total since going 2-14 in 2006, and their last three-win season was in 2014.
Bowers Poised for Big Game
Fans should keep an eye on tight end Brock Bowers, who is expected to have a significant impact against the Jaguars. Jacksonville has struggled to defend tight ends throughout the season, with notable performances from opponents including Tucker Kraft of Green Bay and Hunter Henry of New England.
