Dorian Thompson-Robinson is determined to move beyond being a temporary solution in Cleveland’s complex quarterback situation. As he prepares to start against Cincinnati this week, the second-year quarterback from UCLA sees the next three games as a crucial opportunity to prove he can be the Browns’ long-term starter.
“Best believe we’re trying to take full advantage of it,” Thompson-Robinson said Wednesday. “We’re going to go out there and try to win these games.”
This Sunday marks Thompson-Robinson’s fourth career start, following head coach Kevin Stefanski’s decision to bench Jameis Winston. Despite Winston’s initial success in reviving the offense, he struggled recently, throwing eight interceptions in his last three games. While Stefanski has indicated a week-to-week approach for the starting position, Thompson-Robinson is focused on the immediate challenge.
“I’m focusing on the Bengals,” the 25-year-old quarterback stated. “I’m breaking down their coverage right now. I’m not worried about anything other than this week.”
Thompson-Robinson’s rookie season saw him go 1-2 in three starts, with his first appearance coming unexpectedly when Deshaun Watson was unable to play due to a shoulder injury. His subsequent starts improved, highlighted by a game-winning drive in a 13-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers.
Stefanski has noted Thompson-Robinson’s growth in his second year, praising his study habits and preparation. “He’s done a very good job of getting up to speed on all the nuances of the position,” Stefanski said. “He’s really taken to the preparation part of this really well.”
Having learned that nothing is guaranteed in the NFL, Thompson-Robinson understands the importance of each play. After suffering a concussion last season, which led to the signing of veteran Joe Flacco, he is now ready to seize his opportunity without taking anything for granted.
“When your leash is kind of short, every play matters,” he acknowledged. “Ball security is job security, and making sure the other team doesn’t touch it is probably my main concern.”
Winston, who energized the Browns following Watson’s season-ending Achilles injury, is now in a backup role after struggling with turnovers. He expressed disappointment over his demotion but acknowledged the need for performance.
“Do I like it? Of course not,” Winston said. “I know I’m a starting quarterback in this league. You have to produce and get wins for your team.”
NOTES: Stefanski announced that kicker Dustin Hopkins will return to the starting lineup after struggling recently. Defensive end Myles Garrett practiced without issues after being poked in the eye against Kansas City. Tight end David Njoku (hamstring), cornerback Martin Emerson Jr. (concussion), and defensive tackle Shelby Harris (elbow) did not practice. Receiver Cedric Tillman remains in concussion protocol and has missed the past three games.
