Former British tennis star Laura Robson has expressed her excitement about a potential matchup between Nick Kyrgios and Jannik Sinner at the Australian Open, while also emphasizing the importance of maintaining respect on the court. Kyrgios, the Australian tennis sensation, recently stated his desire to face the world No. 1 in Melbourne, suggesting he aims to provoke the crowd against him, which he acknowledged may involve some level of disrespect.
Robson, who has covered Grand Slam tournaments alongside Kyrgios for Eurosport this year, shared her perspective on his comments. “I don’t think you ever want a situation where all respect goes out the window. If we can avoid that, that would be great,” she told Eurosport.
Discussing the potential clash, Robson noted that it could be “really interesting,” particularly if the two players faced off in the earlier rounds, with Sinner still finding his rhythm. “It would have to be close enough for the crowd to get that involved, wouldn’t it? It would need to reach a tight scoreline that they can latch onto. I want to say he’s got that challenge on his hands first to keep it really close, and then we’ll see. Because we know that Sinner is going to be sharp in that situation, too,” Robson added.
Robson also touched on Kyrgios’s outspoken criticism of Sinner’s doping case, recognizing that while the Australian is known for his strong opinions, she commended Sinner for how he has handled the situation in recent months.
