The Los Angeles Chargers are eager for a quick turnaround this week as they prepare for a crucial AFC West matchup against the Denver Broncos on Thursday night. Following a disappointing 40-17 defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, in which they surrendered 512 yards, the Chargers are focused on addressing their defensive shortcomings.
Defensive coordinator Jesse Minter’s unit faces the challenge of recovering from what has been their worst performance of the season. Safety Derwin James Jr. emphasized the need for accountability among players. “It doesn’t matter what the Broncos have; it’s about us,” he stated. “We didn’t need the coaches to tell us what needed to be fixed. It’s on us to execute.”
One major area of concern for the Chargers is their third-down defense. After allowing opponents to convert only 33.3% of third downs in their first 12 games, the Chargers struggled significantly in their last two outings, permitting 17 of 30 conversions, including two touchdowns. Alarmingly, they have not forced a punt in five quarters and have allowed scoring drives on 10 of their opponents’ last 13 possessions. Minter acknowledged the need for improvement, saying, “Anytime you don’t play well is a concern. You hope that you have a strong enough foundation to trust each other and move on to the next one.”
The Chargers will need to contain Denver quarterback Bo Nix, who has demonstrated his ability to extend plays. Nix has scrambled 38 times this season for a total of 264 yards, and he rushed for 60 yards in a recent game. James praised Nix’s performance, noting, “He’s doing good for a rookie. He has taken command of the offense and spread the ball around.”
The Broncos’ offense is finding its rhythm, scoring at least three touchdowns in consecutive games for the first time this season. Linebacker Khalil Mack stressed the importance of bringing energy to the game, pointing out that a lack of enthusiasm was evident during their last matchup. “We have to bring some energy and juice. You could see from the first play that it wasn’t there,” he said. “We need to play with excitement.”
Despite losing three of their last four games, the Chargers (8-6) can secure a playoff spot with a victory on Thursday, provided the Indianapolis Colts and Miami Dolphins lose their games on Sunday. Currently, Los Angeles is positioned as the seventh seed in the AFC, which would lead to a first-round matchup against either the Buffalo Bills or the Kansas City Chiefs.
Injury Report: Quarterback Justin Herbert was limited in practice on Tuesday as he continues to deal with a sprained left ankle. Guard Zion Johnson (ankle) did not practice for the second consecutive day and is likely to miss Thursday’s game, with Jamaree Salyer expected to start in his place.
