Barkom Stuns Jastrzebski in Thrilling Five-Setter

The 16th leg of the Polish PlusLiga regular season delivered thrilling action over the weekend, with five out of eight matches decided in fifth-set tie-breakers. In a stunning upset, Barkom Kazhany Lviv, the only foreign team in the league and currently second from the bottom, secured an away victory against the defending champions and table leaders, Jastrzebski Wegiel Jastrzebie-Zdroj.

Playing in front of nearly 2,500 fans in Jastrzebie-Zdroj on Saturday, Barkom triumphed with a score of 3-2 (25-20, 27-25, 21-25, 13-25, 15-13), disappointing the home crowd. Opposite Vasyl Tupchii and middle blocker Vladyslav Shchurov each contributed 15 points to the victory, with Shchurov impressively recording seven kill blocks. Tupchii was named the match’s Most Valuable Player (MVP). For Jastrzebski, Argentine outside hitter Luciano Vicentin was the top scorer with 25 points. Despite the loss, Jastrzebski remains at the top of the standings with 41 points and a 13-3 record, while Barkom sits in 15th place with 11 points and a 4-12 record.

In another closely contested match on Saturday, Aluron CMC Warta Zawiercie edged out BOGDANKA LUK Lublin with a 3-2 victory (25-18, 18-25, 25-19, 21-25, 15-12), increasing their lead over Lublin to four points. Aluron now holds third place with 36 points and a 12-4 record, while BOGDANKA is fourth with 32 points and an 11-5 record. American outside hitter Aaron Russell led Aluron with a match-high 23 points, earning MVP honors, while his teammate Karol Butryn contributed five aces. Lublin’s Wilfredo Leon also shone with 22 points.

PGE Projekt Warsaw closed the gap on the league leaders with a convincing 3-0 (25-20, 25-19, 25-21) victory over ZAKSA Kedzierzyn-Kozle on Thursday. Bartlomiej Boladz was the standout performer for Projekt, scoring 14 points. With this win, Projekt holds second place with 38 points and a 14-2 record, while ZAKSA is fifth with 31 points and a 10-6 record.

Steam Hemarpol Norwid Czestochowa faced a setback this weekend, losing a hard-fought match to Slepsk Malow Suwalki 3-2 (26-24, 24-26, 20-25, 25-21, 18-16) on Sunday. Despite the loss, Norwid remains in sixth place with 29 points and a 10-6 record, while Slepsk improves to ninth place with 23 points and a 9-7 record. Slepsk’s Bartosz Filipiak led his team with 29 points, including three aces, while Patrik Indra of Norwid recorded a match-high 31 points.

Earlier on Sunday, Asseco Resovia Rzeszow claimed a 3-1 (25-23, 25-23, 28-30, 25-19) victory over PSG Stal Nysa, with Jakub Bucki scoring a match-high 27 points. Resovia remains seventh with 28 points and an 8-8 record, while Stal sits just above the relegation zone in 13th place with 12 points and a 3-13 record.

PGE GiEK SKRA Belchatow maintained their eighth-place standing with a narrow 3-2 (25-17, 15-25, 19-25, 30-28, 17-15) victory over Indykpol AZS Olsztyn, who remains in 10th place. Serbian outside hitter Miran Kujundzic led Belchatow with 24 points, while Indykpol’s Jan Hadrava topped the match with 28 points.

The weekend concluded with Trefl Gdansk defeating Cuprum Stilon Gorzow Wielkopolski in straight sets, 3-0 (25-23, 33-31, 27-25). Trefl’s Piotr Orczyk was the standout performer, contributing 18 points to the victory. This result allowed Trefl to move up to 11th place with 20 points, while Cuprum dropped to 12th with 19 points.

In a crucial relegation battle on Friday, GKS Katowice rallied from two sets down to defeat Nowak-Mosty MKS Bedzin 3-2 (18-25, 22-25, 25-19, 25-19, 15-12). Aymen Bouguerra of Katowice led the match with 22 points. Despite the win, GKS remains at the bottom of the table in 16th place with 6 points and a 2-14 record, while Bedzin is 14th with 12 points and a 3-13 record.

The 17th leg of the PlusLiga will take place from December 19 to December 22.
