Enes Ünal delivered a stunning free kick in the dying moments of the match, securing a 1-1 draw for Bournemouth against West Ham in the Premier League on Monday.
Both teams struggled to penetrate each other’s defenses, with goalkeepers making crucial saves throughout the match. However, in the 87th minute, West Ham broke the deadlock after a VAR review led referee Chris Kavanagh to award a penalty for a handball by Tyler Adams. Lucas Paqueta converted the penalty, putting West Ham ahead.
Bournemouth, which had been more dominant in the second half, faced a formidable performance from West Ham goalkeeper Łukasz Fabianski. Yet, in the 90th minute, Ünal curled a free kick into the top corner, leveling the score and earning Bournemouth a well-deserved point.
“Credit to him, big moment, especially the reaction as well; I thought the boys were brilliant,” Bournemouth forward Ryan Christie told Sky Sports. “It was a moment of magic to get us level.”
The penalty decision sparked debate, with Christie expressing frustration over what he perceived as inconsistent officiating. “I thought it was harsh. I know his hand is high, but he’s so close to the ball. We didn’t get one last week against Ipswich in a similar scenario. It’s a bit frustrating because we dominated. But it’s good to get a point in the end.”
Bournemouth’s late equalizer showcased their resilience, as they have now earned nine points from losing positions this season—only Aston Villa and Manchester City have done better. The result lifted Bournemouth to sixth place in the standings, just two points behind Manchester City, while West Ham remained in 14th.
