Penn State Women’s Volleyball Advances to Semifinals with Win Over Creighton

Penn State’s women’s volleyball team remains undefeated at home after defeating Creighton in a thrilling five-set Regional Final. The victory sends the top-seeded Nittany Lions to the semifinals of the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2017.

The match took place at Rec Hall, where Penn State took full advantage of its home-court support. The atmosphere was charged, with fans participating in the team’s White Out promotion, creating an intimidating environment for the No. 2-seeded Bluejays. Penn State’s coach, Katie Schumacher-Cawley, acknowledged the significant role the fans played in the team’s success.

“We weren’t sure with the weather, but our fans showed up and were loud,” Schumacher-Cawley said. “It’s probably the loudest I’ve heard Rec Hall in a long time. They really gave us energy, and we appreciate it.”

The Nittany Lions dominated the first set but faced strong resistance from Creighton, which won the second set and led much of the third. As momentum seemed to shift in Creighton’s favor, Penn State responded with resilience. They won a crucial third set, pushing the match to four sets.

Libero Gillian Grimes praised her team’s determination throughout the match.

“We practice for situations like this, but I’m just speechless,” Grimes said. “I’m so proud of the fight we showed in all five sets. It was unreal.”

Creighton tied the match by winning the fourth set, setting up a decisive fifth set. Despite the pressure, Schumacher-Cawley had confidence in her team’s ability to close the match.

“We put them in scoring positions every day in practice,” Schumacher-Cawley said. “I trust their skills, and I know they can find a way out of tough situations.”

For seniors like Jess Mruzik, this victory marked the final match at Rec Hall. Mruzik reflected on the special bond between the team and the fans.

“It’s amazing to win at home in front of them,” Mruzik said. “They do so much for us, and it’s great to repay them with a win.”

With their victory, the Nittany Lions will travel to Louisville, Kentucky, for the semifinals, where they will face Nebraska. Though Penn State defeated Nebraska in their regular-season finale, Rec Hall will not provide the same advantage this time.

Schumacher-Cawley emphasized the importance of preparation as the team looks ahead to the rematch with Nebraska. “We’ll enjoy the win for a day, but then we’ll start preparing on Monday,” she said. “It’s going to be a special match, and if we compete and stick to our game plan, we’ll be ready.”

Grimes expressed her pride in the team’s achievement, noting that the chance to compete in Louisville is a significant milestone.

“I’m so proud of these girls for getting it done in Rec Hall,” Grimes said. “I’m grateful for this opportunity, and we’re not done yet.”
