Police reported that missiles were thrown at officers amid violent clashes in Glasgow on Sunday, just ahead of the Scottish League Cup final between arch-rivals Celtic and Rangers.
Authorities noted incidents of broken windows and announced they would implement stop-and-search measures to “prevent disorder and serious violence.”
Social media videos depicted flares being set off in Glasgow city center, with groups of masked individuals running through the streets. Shoppers were seen seeking refuge in store entrances as chaos unfolded around them.
“We have dealt with several incidents of disorder and violence in Glasgow city center today,” stated Chief Superintendent Stevie Dolan. “The use of weapons or violence will not be tolerated, and officers will take necessary action to ensure public safety. This behavior affects other members of the public and the vast majority of football supporters who wish to enjoy the cup final safely.”
Celtic and Rangers, both based in Glasgow, share one of the fiercest rivalries in British football. The match took place at Hampden Park, Scotland’s national stadium, where Celtic triumphed 5-4 on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 draw following extra time.
