Dallas Cowboys cornerback Trevon Diggs will undergo season-ending surgery on his left knee, according to two sources familiar with the situation. The decision comes as Diggs was set to miss his third game in four weeks due to ongoing knee issues.
This injury is to the same knee that required surgery last season to repair a torn ACL; however, sources indicate that the ligament is currently intact. The sources spoke to The Associated Press on the condition of anonymity, as the team has not publicly disclosed specific details.
Diggs has been downgraded to out for Sunday’s matchup against the Carolina Panthers (3-10), and the Cowboys (5-8) confirmed that the 2021 All-Pro will not make the trip. The 26-year-old cornerback has already missed two games this season due to groin and knee injuries before returning for a 27-20 loss to the Cincinnati Bengals on Monday night. He has also dealt with foot and ankle issues throughout the year. Last season, a torn ACL sustained during practice sidelined him for the final 15 games.
With Diggs’ impending surgery, he will become the third projected starter for the Cowboys to undergo a season-ending procedure, joining quarterback Dak Prescott, who is out with a torn hamstring, and seven-time All-Pro guard Zack Martin, who is sidelined due to an ankle injury.
Linebacker DeMarvion Overshown, who emerged as a starter in his second year, also suffered a season-ending injury to his right knee against the Bengals. This injury could potentially keep him out for all of 2025, following a torn ACL in his left knee that caused him to miss his entire rookie season. Overshown was placed on injured reserve on Saturday.
Defensive end DeMarcus Lawrence is on track to miss the final 13 games of the season due to a foot injury, while two-time All-Pro pass rusher Micah Parsons has already missed four games with a high ankle sprain.
Cornerback DaRon Bland, a 2023 All-Pro after setting an NFL record with five interception returns for touchdowns, missed the first 10 games of the season due to a stress fracture in his foot. The recent loss to the Bengals marked the only game this season in which both Diggs and Bland were on the field together.
In response to these injuries, the Cowboys elevated cornerback Andrew Booth and center Dakoda Shepley from the practice squad.
