Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow addressed the media on Wednesday regarding a recent break-in at his home that occurred while he and the team were away for a game against the Dallas Cowboys.
Burrow expressed his feelings about the incident succinctly, stating, “I feel like my privacy has been violated in more ways than one. Way more is out there than I would want out there and that I care to share. So that’s all I’ve got to say about that.”
The break-in comes amid heightened security concerns for athletes. Last month, both the NFL and NBA issued alerts to their players following a series of burglaries targeting homes while athletes were away for games. The NFL’s warning was prompted by break-ins at the residences of Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce in October. Mahomes commented on the situation, saying, “Obviously it’s frustrating, disappointing.”
The NBA followed suit after burglaries at the homes of Milwaukee Bucks forward Bobby Portis and Minnesota Timberwolves guard Mike Conley Jr. prompted a similar alert.
In light of these incidents, Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa revealed on Wednesday that he hired personal security after one of his cars was broken into last year. “It was a little too close for my comfort with my family being in the house,” Tagovailoa said. “So we got personal security to take care of all of that. When we’re on the road, we’ve got someone with my wife and someone also at the house, surveying the house.”
According to a report from the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office, Burrow’s home was ransacked, but fortunately, no one was injured during the break-in. An employee of Burrow discovered the shattered bedroom window and the disarray upon arriving at the Anderson Township residence on Monday night.
Reflecting on the challenges of living in the public eye, Burrow stated, “We live a public life, and one of my least favorite parts of that is the lack of privacy. That has been difficult for me to deal with for my entire career. I’m still learning. I understand that’s the life that we choose, but it doesn’t make it any easier to deal with.”
