Substitute Sveindís Jónsdóttir made a stunning impact by scoring four second-half goals, leading Wolfsburg to a decisive 6-1 victory over Roma on Wednesday and securing a spot in the quarterfinals of the Women’s Champions League.
Entering the match in the 66th minute with Wolfsburg ahead 2-1, Jónsdóttir quickly ensured the team met the required two-goal margin for advancement in the group stage. She scored her first goal just two minutes after coming on and completed a hat trick by the 89th minute, adding a fourth goal in stoppage time.
The match began with Wolfsburg taking an early lead through Alexandra Popp. However, Roma equalized in the 56th minute with a goal from Valentina Giacinti. Wolfsburg regained the lead nine minutes later when Lineth Beerensteyn scored.
With this victory, Wolfsburg sits second in Group A with nine points from five matches. Eight-time champions Lyon have already secured the top spot in the group after defeating Galatasaray 6-0 in Istanbul. Roma currently holds third place with six points, while Galatasaray remains at the bottom without any points.
In Group B, Chelsea continued their perfect record with a 6-1 win against Twente, while Real Madrid triumphed 3-0 over Celtic, with Signe Bruun scoring twice for Madrid. Both Chelsea and Madrid have already qualified for the quarterfinals, with Chelsea leading the group on 15 points, three ahead of Madrid. The two teams are set to face each other in Madrid next week to determine the group winner. Twente has three points, and Celtic is yet to earn a point in the group stage.
