In a recent episode of his podcast, Andy Roddick recounted a memorable and amusing encounter with a heckler during a match in Houston, which left both the crowd and the heckler stunned. The incident took place 18 years ago when Roddick was competing on the clay courts, having advanced past Paul Capdeville and Oliver Marach before facing Tommy Haas in a closely contested quarterfinal.
Although Roddick couldn’t pinpoint the exact match, he speculated that the heckling occurred during his round-of-16 match against Marach, which he won 6-3, 6-4. From the start of the match, a spectator began to heckle the former world No. 1, who was just 24 at the time and found it hard to ignore the taunts.
After missing a shot, Roddick expressed his frustration with a curse, prompting the heckler to sarcastically ask if he kissed his mother with that mouth. Roddick’s witty comeback, “I kiss your mother with this mouth,” resonated throughout the section of the stadium, causing the heckler to rush toward the court in anger. However, he was quickly subdued by security. Rather than feeling threatened, Roddick found the situation hilarious.
Reflecting on the incident, Roddick shared, “I’m playing Houston one year at the clay court event there, I think it’s like 2006… This guy is just killing me the entire time, like just heckling me. I miss a ball in the second set, and I say ‘Damn it,’ and he goes, ‘Ohhhhh, now we’re cursing.’ It builds and builds, and I tell the umpire there’s going to be some fireworks here in a second. When he asked if I kiss my mother with that mouth, I replied, ‘No. I kiss your mother with this mouth.’ The whole crowd went ‘oooh,’ and the guy started running down to the court and got tackled. I was just dying laughing.”
In addition to sharing this story, Roddick recently announced a new podcast deal with Vox Media, which has been well-received since its launch in early 2024. He took to X (formerly Twitter) to express gratitude to his supporters and cheekily acknowledged one of his biggest critics, a Novak Djokovic superfan known as Pavvy G. In a light-hearted exchange, Pavvy G congratulated Roddick on his success, adding a quote: “Keep your friends close, but enemies closer.”
Roddick’s ability to engage with critics and hecklers has evolved, showcasing a more mature approach while still maintaining his trademark humor.
