Brighton & Hove Albion manager Fabian Hurzeler is focused on finding the “right solution” for striker Evan Ferguson, who is reportedly a candidate for a loan move during the January transfer window. The Republic of Ireland international has had limited opportunities this season, starting just two Premier League matches. The 20-year-old missed Friday’s 0-0 draw against Brentford due to an ankle injury but has made 10 substitute appearances, scoring once.
Hurzeler expressed his satisfaction with having Ferguson in the squad but acknowledged that discussions regarding the player’s future are ongoing. “At first, I think he needs to get back on the pitch,” Hurzeler said ahead of Monday’s match against Aston Villa. “The rumors, I won’t discuss them in public. It’s important that the player knows our ideas and we understand his. Honesty is crucial to finding the right solution for both the club and the player. I’m really happy that Evan is with us, and I hope he returns to the pitch soon.”
Ferguson’s absence has coincided with Brighton’s winless streak, which has now extended to six league matches, including five draws against teams in the bottom half of the table. This poor run has seen the Seagulls drop from second place to mid-table.
Reflecting on his first half-season in English football, Hurzeler expressed mixed feelings. “We should be disappointed with our results, as we have other ambitions,” the 31-year-old German said. “We want to finish games with better outcomes. However, we understand that building a team is a process. We have made a lot of changes and have a very young squad, so we need to give them time. Progress is not always linear; it comes in waves, and we must work hard.”
Looking ahead to the match against Aston Villa, who are only two points above Brighton in the standings, Hurzeler acknowledged the challenges posed by Unai Emery’s side. “Villa has also experienced a tough period but is now finding their form,” he noted. “They have had impressive performances in the Champions League and possess a clear style of play. Emery has significantly influenced their philosophy, and they feature some outstanding individual players. It will be a great opportunity for us to improve and showcase our identity.
