Shaquil Barrett Signs to Return to Buccaneers

Two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Shaquil Barrett is making a return to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers after signing with the team on Saturday. The announcement coincided with the activation of safety Jordan Whitehead from injured reserve ahead of Sunday’s home game against the Carolina Panthers.

Barrett, who played five seasons with the Buccaneers from 2019 to 2023, made a significant impact during his tenure. He set a franchise record with 19.5 sacks in his first season and played a crucial role in securing the team’s second Super Bowl title the following year. Over his time in Tampa Bay, Barrett started 70 games, accumulating 45 sacks, 15 forced fumbles, two fumble recoveries, and three interceptions.

After being released last winter due to salary cap considerations, Barrett signed a one-year contract with the Miami Dolphins. However, he announced his retirement on social media just before the start of training camp in July. Last month, Barrett chose to unretire and subsequently signed with the Buccaneers after clearing waivers earlier this week.

In addition to Barrett’s return, Whitehead, who has been sidelined for the past four games due to a pectoral injury, is set to rejoin the lineup. His return follows the Buccaneers placing safety Christian Izien on injured reserve with a similar injury.

The Buccaneers also activated rookie wide receiver Kameron Johnson from injured reserve and elevated punter Jack Browning to the active roster from the practice squad on Saturday.
