With the preseason behind them, the Pittsburgh Steelers are gearing up for the critical final stretch of the regular season. Currently sitting at 10-3 and atop their division, the Steelers have enjoyed a successful run, but much of their success has come against teams with losing records. Six of their victories have been against such teams, while their four wins against more competitive opponents—Denver, the Chargers, Washington, and Baltimore—come with the caveat that none of those teams lead their divisions.
As the Steelers prepare for a challenging slate of games, they will face the NFC powerhouse Philadelphia Eagles this Sunday, followed by a rematch against the Ravens and a Christmas Day showdown with Patrick Mahomes and the defending Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs.
“This stretch will show us how good we can be,” said safety DeShon Elliott.
Coach Mike Tomlin’s focus has kept the team grounded, with wide receiver Calvin Austin III needing a reminder of the tough matchups ahead following a relatively straightforward 27-14 victory over the Cleveland Browns. “Who do we play again?” Austin joked, before acknowledging the challenge ahead.
“That’s a tough little stretch, but at the end of the day, it’s a five-star matchup as Coach T says because we’re in it,” he added. “We know that when we’re out there, it’s going to always be a big-time performance.” The Steelers are confident following their recent win, where they capitalized on Cleveland’s mistakes, including penalties and turnovers.
Despite their promising start to the season, the Steelers recognize that their ultimate success will be determined by their performance in the upcoming games. “I feel like the league kind of hates us already,” Elliott remarked. “It’s all right. We’re going to go out here, play those games, work our butts off, and aim to go 3-0.”
What’s Working
The Steelers have effectively involved multiple players in their offensive strategy. Quarterback Russell Wilson has consistently targeted a wide range of skill position players, connecting with 10 different teammates against the Bengals and eight against the Browns. Tomlin praised veteran Scotty Miller for his impressive third-down reception, reinforcing the importance of every player’s contribution.
What Needs Improvement
Wide receiver George Pickens’ discipline remains a concern. Despite his talent, Pickens has faced multiple fines for unsportsmanlike conduct and unnecessary roughness during his career. His teammates recognize his importance to the offense, but his ability to avoid costly penalties will be vital as the playoffs approach.
Stock Watch
Stock Up: Defensive tackle Keeanu Benton is emerging as a strong presence on the defensive line. His first career interception against the Browns highlighted his growing football IQ and potential as a future leader in the Steelers’ defense.
Stock Down: Those who bet on the Steelers missing the playoffs are likely reconsidering their choices. Initially seen as a risky investment due to roster changes and a tough division, Pittsburgh now boasts a 99% chance of making the postseason for the fourth time in five years.
Injury Update
Defensive tackle Larry Ogunjobi, recently nominated as the team’s Walter Payton Man of the Year, exited the game against Cleveland with a groin injury. Meanwhile, Montravius Adams (knee) is expected to return, potentially bolstering the defensive line against the Eagles.
Key Number
Plus-28: The Steelers’ turnover margin since the start of the 2023 season, leading the NFL.
Next Steps
The Steelers aim to achieve a feat they haven’t accomplished in nearly 60 years: a road victory against the Eagles. Their last win in Philadelphia was on October 24, 1965.
