Panthers Lose RB Jonathon Brooks to ACL Injury

The Carolina Panthers have announced that rookie running back Jonathon Brooks will miss the remainder of the season after suffering a torn ACL in his right knee. This injury occurred just three games into his return to the field.

Brooks sustained the non-contact injury during the Panthers’ 22-16 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday, just moments after he took his first carry of the game. He was subsequently carted off to the locker room.

Head coach Dave Canales confirmed that Brooks will undergo surgery in the coming weeks and expressed sympathy for the player, stating that Brooks is “really crushed and discouraged” by this second significant knee injury in 13 months. Brooks initially tore his ACL in November 2023 while playing for Texas, which led to surgery and a drop in his NFL draft stock. The Panthers selected him in the second round, hoping to develop him gradually.

After missing the first 10 games of the season, Brooks returned to action three weeks ago but recorded only nine carries for 22 yards and three receptions for 23 yards during that span. Canales informed the team of the MRI results before addressing the media, emphasizing the team’s support for Brooks.

With Brooks sidelined, Mike Boone is expected to step up as the Panthers’ No. 2 running back.

Quarterback Performance

In other team news, second-year quarterback Bryce Young demonstrated continued improvement, showing decisiveness and the ability to make plays under pressure, despite throwing one interception. Young completed 19 of 34 passes for 191 yards and a touchdown on a crucial fourth down play, while also rushing seven times for 29 yards. Canales praised Young’s decision-making and overall progress.

Defensive Struggles

The Panthers’ run defense, which entered the game ranked last in the league, struggled once again, allowing Saquon Barkley to rush for 124 yards at an average of 6.2 yards per carry. The Eagles amassed a total of 209 rushing yards against Carolina.

Player Highlights and Challenges

Veteran wide receiver Adam Thielen continued to impress, catching nine passes for 102 yards on 11 targets, including a key fourth-down reception during the Panthers’ final drive. This performance followed a previous game where Thielen recorded 99 yards and a touchdown.

However, rookie first-round draft pick Xavier Legette faced challenges, dropping three passes, including a critical one on Carolina’s final possession that could have tied the game. Canales reassured Legette of his importance to the team and expressed confidence in his ability to improve.

Injury Updates

The Panthers are also monitoring injuries to key players. Top cornerback Jaycee Horn suffered a groin injury during the game and is considered day-to-day. The team hopes to welcome back wide receiver Jalen Coker, edge rusher Jadeveon Clowney, and safety Nick Scott this week after they missed the game against the Eagles.

Looking Ahead

The Panthers, now facing six consecutive seasons with at least 10 losses, will host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday. Given their 3-10 record and dwindling playoff hopes, Bank of America Stadium is expected to see a significant turnout of Cowboys fans.
