Getafe secured a crucial 1-0 victory over fellow relegation battlers Espanyol on Monday, lifting themselves out of La Liga’s relegation zone and increasing the pressure on their Catalan rivals.
The match’s only goal came from on-loan Real Madrid striker Álvaro Rodriguez, who scored with a precise header just seven minutes into the game. Both teams had opportunities to score, particularly in a more dynamic second half, but the score remained unchanged at 1-0.
With this win, Getafe climbed two spots to 15th place, creating a three-point buffer between themselves and Espanyol, who sit third from the bottom. The defeat marked Espanyol’s sixth consecutive loss on the road under coach Manolo González.
Despite a modest crowd of 7,559 at the Coliseum, Getafe goalkeeper David Soria emphasized the importance of home matches for the team’s success. “We have to be strong at home, in front of our own fans,” Soria stated. “This is where our salvation lies.”
