Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert briefly exited the field late in the second quarter during the team’s 19-17 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday night.
Herbert left after a hard hit from Chiefs linebacker Nick Bolton but returned to the game after missing just one play. The incident occurred as Herbert scrambled to his right on a third-and-10, throwing a deep pass to Quentin Johnston. Following the hit, he remained on the field for a few moments while trainers assessed his left leg before walking slowly to the sideline.
“I just took a shot to the knee, but I should be OK,” Herbert said after the game. “Maybe it was a helmet or an elbow. I’ll have to watch the film. I just took a shot there and was in some pain, so I came off. I felt good to go, so I went back in.”
Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh characterized the injury as a leg contusion, praising Herbert’s resilience. “He’s as tough as they come,” Harbaugh said. “A warrior.”
The completion to Johnston was nullified by a penalty, and backup quarterback Taylor Heinicke took over for Herbert, leading to the Chargers’ fifth consecutive drive ending in a punt.
