Rublev Questions Djokovic: Does Murray Add Value

Andrey Rublev took part in the UTS event in London, opting to maintain his competitive form rather than take a vacation as he prepares for the upcoming tennis season. During the event, Rublev reflected on his recent season, discussed his mental health challenges, and shared his thoughts on the new partnership between Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray.

Rublev expressed curiosity about Djokovic’s decision to enlist Murray in his coaching team, acknowledging Djokovic’s status as one of the greatest players in tennis history. The world No. 8 questioned what Murray could bring to Djokovic’s already well-rounded game, suggesting that the Serbian may not have much left to learn. However, he recognized the potential benefits of their friendship, emphasizing the importance of positive chemistry in high-stakes competition.

Rublev noted the intrigue surrounding how the dynamic between the two friends will unfold, particularly during emotionally charged moments when Djokovic might express frustration toward his coaching box. “It will be interesting to see Andy’s reactions when Novak gets too emotional and throws bad words at his team,” Rublev remarked.

As Djokovic embarks on this new chapter with Murray, he seeks fresh motivation after an impressive 2023 season, in which he reached four Grand Slam finals and won three titles, solidifying his position in the GOAT debate. However, Djokovic faced challenges in 2024, experiencing three losses and one withdrawal in major tournaments. His focus now shifts to the Paris Olympic Games, where he aims to capture the only title missing from his illustrious collection.

Djokovic, who recently parted ways with coach Goran Ivanisevic after nearly five years, surprised the tennis world by bringing Murray into his coaching fold. Murray, who had stepped back from competitive tennis following the Olympic Games in Paris, accepted the role, eager to contribute to Djokovic’s quest for further success.

Rublev also reflected on his own season, which he described as a roller coaster. Finishing with a 43-26 record, he claimed two ATP titles, including a Masters 1000 victory in Madrid, and secured his fifth consecutive year-end top-10 finish. However, he faced moments of frustration and self-criticism throughout the year.

In a candid interview during the UTS exhibition, Rublev discussed his struggles with mental health, expressing a desire for a more balanced and successful 2025 season. He acknowledged the emotional toll of the sport, revealing that he experienced meltdowns and self-harm during challenging times. Despite the difficulties, Rublev remains optimistic, hoping to prioritize his mental well-being and approach the game with a calmer mindset in the coming year.

“Novak knows tennis better than anyone, and he can feel fresh and motivated with Andy in his box,” Rublev stated. With his explosive forehand and relentless work ethic, a mentally stronger Rublev could pose an even greater challenge on the ATP Tour in 2025.
