Depay Transforms Corinthians Becomes Brazil’s Star

The most popular soccer player in Brazil today didn’t emerge from the sandy beaches of Rio de Janeiro or the mud fields of São Paulo. Instead, Memphis Depay hails from the quaint village of Moordrecht in the Netherlands.

The 30-year-old striker’s decision to leave Europe for South America in September surprised many, especially given his challenging stints at Barcelona and Atlético Madrid. While several prominent clubs, including some in the Champions League, were interested in signing him, Depay chose to join Corinthians, a São Paulo club grappling with significant debt and the threat of relegation.

In his first press conference at Corinthians, Depay admitted, “I don’t have the answer for that,” when asked about his unexpected move. However, he felt a strong connection to the club, stating, “the energies showed” that a long-term contract was right for him. Despite Corinthians’ ongoing struggles, including a five-year title drought and debts nearing 2.4 billion Brazilian reais (about $400 million), Depay saw potential in the club’s rich history of success.

Since joining Corinthians, Depay has revitalized the team’s fortunes. He helped the club escape the relegation zone, moving from 18th place to qualify for next year’s Copa Libertadores after an impressive nine consecutive victories in the Brazilian league. In just 14 matches, he scored seven goals, including a stunning bicycle kick in a decisive 3-0 win over Grêmio in the final round.

“I’ve said from the beginning that I can bring my experience and talents to inspire the team,” Depay remarked after a recent 3-0 victory against Bahia. “There are many places where you can earn a big salary, but this was a challenge for me.”

Depay’s impact has been significant; five of his seven league goals have been crucial in securing points for Corinthians. His contributions include two free-kick goals and several calm finishes that capitalized on opportunities often missed by his teammates. His remarkable performance has left fans wondering how much more he could have achieved had he arrived earlier in the season.

Currently, Corinthians sits in 7th place with 56 points, well clear of relegation but still trailing champions Botafogo by 23 points.

The Dutch striker has quickly become a fan favorite across Brazil, with supporters from rival clubs expressing their admiration. After a recent match, local fans eagerly lined up to take pictures with him, showcasing his growing popularity.

“I like to do his celebration, putting my fingers on my ears,” said 11-year-old Palmeiras fan Miguel Fernandes. “This is the first time I like a Corinthians player.”

Off the pitch, Depay has also garnered respect for his community engagement. He has been seen in favelas near São Paulo, connecting with locals and participating in samba events linked to Corinthians’ ultra supporters. His efforts to engage with Brazilian culture have further endeared him to fans.

“Memphis has brought us experience, goals, and a big personality,” said Corinthians soccer executive Fabinho Soldado. “He has made Corinthians visible worldwide, and people feel a connection to him.”

Having previously played for PSV Eindhoven, Manchester United, and Lyon, Depay noted that he has never felt such a strong bond with a fanbase. He has embraced the local culture, learning chants in Portuguese and celebrating victories with fans.

“South and Latin America have a different energy,” he said. “They are more fascinated by life, and it’s not just about football. I’m really impressed.”

Despite questions about the competitiveness of the Brazilian league and his absence from the Netherlands national team since moving, Depay remains hopeful. He expressed confidence that if needed, national coach Ronald Koeman knows how to reach him.

As Corinthians fans rally behind him, there is optimism that Depay’s presence in São Paulo could inspire more European players to explore opportunities in South America.
