Chelsea defender Marc Cucurella made a pivotal decision to change his cleats just 12 minutes into Sunday’s London derby against Tottenham Hotspur after slipping contributed to two early goals for the home side.
The Spain international lost his footing on the turf at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium during the fifth and 11th minutes, leading to goals from Dominic Solanke and Dejan Kulusevski that put Spurs ahead 2-0.
Following Kulusevski’s goal, Cucurella dashed to the sidelines, visibly frustrated as he pointed to his cleats. He discarded the faulty pair and quickly donned a new set.
The change proved effective. Just six minutes later, Cucurella assisted Jadon Sancho, who scored to narrow the deficit to 2-1.Chelsea ultimately triumphed 4-3, and Cucurella later shared a photo on social media of his discarded cleats in a bin.“It almost slipped away,” he wrote on Instagram Stories, “but proud of the amazing team effort to turn things around.”
